What Is GEO? How Do You Make Your Company Visible in AI Search?

Do ChatGPT or Gemini recommend your brand to customers? Become visible in AI search with this guide to GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) for businesses.

GEO Nedir? Şirketinizi Yapay Zeka Aramalarında Nasıl Görünür Kılarsınız?

In our recent posts on the Digibus blog, we said the era of search is slowly ending and people are turning to finding things directly. Online searches take a certain amount of time to reach a result. During that process, search engines run an algorithm and show us results directly. The ordering of those results is where what we call SEO comes in.

So if search is ending, what’s replacing it? What is GEO? The answer is GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization. Many people say SEO is dead, but SEO isn’t ending; it’s just shedding its skin.

People Have Stopped Searching; Now They Just Find

AI has moved people from searching to finding directly. We’re free of the burden of searching, but has the information we find become shallower? We look at this shift.

For a search engine to show results after a search, it needs a source. That source can be website content, a podcast or a video. In GEO, we’re still the source. What changes is the context: as source owners, we now need to prepare content that AI chatbots such as Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude can understand, rather than just search engines.

Let’s put ourselves in our audience’s shoes for a moment. Say we’re looking for hotel supplies in the B2B sector. In the past, and even now, we’d browse many websites, spending minutes moving between sites to find the right service or product. So what has changed, and what keeps changing? Most likely, you open ChatGPT or Perplexity and type: “Which are the best minibar manufacturers for hotels? Compare them with their pros and cons.”

In seconds, the AI scans the whole internet for you, reads it, summarizes it and gives you a clear list of recommendations with 3–4 brands.

This is where the real question begins: Is your brand on the short list the AI gives your customer?

If the answer is no, it’s time to get to know the newest and most powerful rule of digital marketing: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

The Shift From Search Engines to Answer Engines

When we went to the library, we’d walk the shelves to find the right book or ask the librarian. But with AI, the way the library works has changed. In a sense, we are now the librarian. 🙂

Let’s explain it like this:

When tools like ChatGPT or Gemini remember your past conversations, they know you better than you know yourself. For example, if you once asked about tropical saltwater fish, when you later say “recommend me a book,” it might suggest a book about tropical saltwater fish. In short, you’re the librarian in the example above.

If the librarian (the AI) can’t make sense of the information in your book, it won’t recommend you to anyone, no matter how long your content is or how fast your site is. The art of getting your company among the brands AI “recommends” is what we call GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

Where Should Companies Start With AI Visibility?

So what can you do today to make your brand visible in ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s new AI overviews? There are three basic steps you can take without drowning in the technical details:

1. Focus on “Why” and “How” Instead of “What” Think about the toughest questions your customers ask you most often. Instead of giving vague answers on your website, create very clear, bulleted, solution-focused pages. AI loves reading and quoting clear, structured information (such as the FAQ format).

2. Share Original Data and Experience What AI hungers for most is “new and original” information. Instead of writing about what everyone already knows, add industry statistics only your company knows, case studies with your own clients and original experience from the field to your site. When information is unique, AI has to cite you as a source when it talks about that topic.

3. Tag Your Content for Bots This is the more technical part, but it’s a detail your agency can easily handle. You should tell bots, in the language of “structured data (schema markup),” whether the information on your site is a blog post, a product review or a user guide. Special code structures that have become popular recently and describe your site’s architecture directly to AI agents will put you a step ahead of your competitors.

Adapting to the New Era

The digital world is no longer just about being visible; it’s also about “being cited as an authority”. In this new ecosystem, where decision-makers use AI like a business assistant, you need to tell your brand’s story, services and products in the right language not only to people but also to these smart bots.

Since October 2013, we’ve witnessed every major revolution in the digital ecosystem and prepared our brands for these transformations. Now, as AI rewrites the rules of the game, we at Digibus are here to help your company take its rightful place in this new era of search.

If you want to start building your strategy today so AI assistants recommend your brand, our team is always happy to have a coffee with you.
