How to Approach Brand Communication

In brand communication, you should take care that everything you communicate reflects your brand identity. Deciding which channels you want to be on is important.

In brand communication, you should take care that everything you communicate reflects your brand identity. Not every style, event or topic will suit you. Deciding which channels you want to be on is an important step. Decide which social media platforms you’ll use, whether you’ll use outdoor advertising and which events you can take part in, and keep track of them all. You can be part of any new development you think suits you and use every place where you can reach your target audience.

Knowing your target audience is very important in brand communication. Who chooses you, and if you’re going after a new audience, who do you want it to be? You can start with questions such as what these people like, how they like to be addressed and which channels they prefer. The answers, along with other brands’ customers, will be very useful in shaping your brand communication strategy.

For example, if you’ve launched a new clothing brand and there are other brands close to your style and audience, their customers can become your audience too. It doesn’t have to be a clothing brand; you might see a brand that makes watches, phone cases or accessories matching your style as close to you. The first thing that matters here is being sure who you’re speaking to. After that, how you speak to them and what you say are very important.

Think about brand communication broadly. Your ads, or the commercials your audience sees, may be its most visible part, but announcing a donation or charitable act as a brand is also brand communication. An event the brand sponsors, and every action it takes there, is part of brand communication too. Thinking even more broadly, your logo, main slogan and all other brand materials are also part of your brand communication.

What to Keep in Mind in Brand Communication

Continuity and Consistency Over Time

Once the points above are defined, the first thing to keep in mind is that no communication is a one-off. Even after you’ve reached a customer once and influenced or persuaded them, it’s very important to keep the communication going. Don’t assume that someone who bought from you once will come back on their own if they were satisfied; keep communicating with them personally. People who own your brand should feel special and feel that they belong.

Sincerity

Whatever your brand stance and message, communicate sincerely with your customers. This doesn’t necessarily mean addressing your audience informally or using a friendly tone. Even if your tone is more serious, your customers should be sure of your sincerity and honesty when they see your communication.

Consistency

One of the most important factors for a brand is consistency. What does that mean? For example, if you’ve expressed a view on a political or social issue, or supported a cause, you shouldn’t do something that shows the opposite.

You can’t publish a message one day and then sponsor an event that contradicts what you condemned or endorsed, or partner with people who do. Nor can you launch a collection made from recycled materials and then dispose of your waste in ways that harm the environment. These create a crisis by drawing public backlash and break your customers’ trust.

Brands reflect people’s lifestyles and are a way many people express themselves. So a consumer who chooses and uses a brand represents that brand and also wants to be represented by it.

You shouldn’t do anything that alienates customers who want to be represented by you.

Differentiation

One of the first steps in building a brand is deciding what it will do differently. Presenting your products or services differently is as important as making them different. Try not to do the same things as your competitors. Research carefully what your audience wants to see done differently and build your communication around it.

If something is expected of you, listen and explore how you can meet that expectation in different ways.

Emotional Connection

Appeal to your audience’s emotions. Persuading someone to buy is usually about being able to influence their emotions. But think bigger than the sale and help customers build an emotional bond with your brand. Explore how you can affect them emotionally and what it takes for them to connect with you, and build an emotional bond between you.

It’s very important that customers are satisfied not only with the product or service but also with the process before and after it reaches them. To achieve this, you need to appeal to emotions. Sometimes even a simple note or gift in the package can be part of that bond.
